CSA Z8000 Standard

CSA Z8000 Standard
Canadian standard for healthcare facility design
When it comes to providing quality healthcare, the planning, design, and construction of healthcare facilities must be considered. Poor design can contribute to infection transmission and negative health outcomes. With Canada’s aging population growing in number and healthcare continuing to represent the largest share of federal capital spending, standards are needed to effectively mitigate these risks and support improved clinical outcomes.
The CSA Z8000 standard offers a comprehensive, Canada wide recognized baseline for the planning, design, and construction of hospitals and other healthcare facilities based on leading research linking better facility design to positive patient outcomes. Designing a medical clinic with compliance to the Z8000 Standard is a comprehensive process that involves careful planning and adherence to specific guidelines for healthcare facility design and construction.
Team Medico is the one of the few medical clinic construction contractors in BC who design clinics based on the high standard set by CSA Z8000. We meet and exceed all codes and requirements and strive towards full sustainability.
Remember that healthcare facility design is a complex process, and it’s essential to work closely with experts and consultants who are well-versed in the Z8000 Standard and healthcare regulations to ensure a safe, efficient, and compliant clinic design. Contact us for free consultation.

CSA Z8000 Canadian Health Care Facilities provides a nationally recognized baseline for the design and construction of hospitals and selected care facilities.
Standards are an important part of the total quality framework supporting health care delivery. The CSA Z8000 standard offers a comprehensive, nationally-recognized baseline for the planning, design, and construction of hospitals and other healthcare facilities based on leading research linking better facility design to positive patient outcomes.
It is not mandatory at the moment but all major accredited hospitals in Canada have adopted this standard for the planning, design and construction of health-care facilities.
This Standard applies to the following facility types:
- acute care hospitals;
- inpatient continuing care hospitals;
- long-term care facilities;
- community-based providers;
- leased/rental suites in office buildings;
- ambulatory care clinics; and
- outpatient care (e.g., clinics, dentists- offices, and doctors- offices).
It provides a nationally recognized baseline for healthcare facility design and construction/renovation in Canada. Architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and specifiers benefit from having a common language to describe facility planning processes, components, and systems for projects such as acute care hospitals, long-term care facilities, and outpatient care (e.g. clinics and dentist/doctor offices).
This Standard applies to new facilities, temporary facilities, and to existing facilities undergoing addition or renovation. It also applies to research and testing facilities that perform medical procedures.
This Standard includes requirements for
- planning and design principles, and the planning process;
- site and facility development;
- general functional service;
- inpatient functional service;
- diagnostic and treatment functional service;
- support functional service;
- common requirements for all facilities; and
- building services and environmental design.
This Standard does not apply to veterinary facilities, funeral homes, or mobile health units.
